Hydrogen Train in India is no longer a futuristic dream it’s a reality set to redefine sustainable transportation. For the first time, Indian Railways is preparing to commission its hydrogen-powered train, a revolutionary step in clean energy innovation.

The Ministry of Railways confirmed on August 13 that the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai has successfully tested the first hydrogen-powered driving power car. This milestone puts India among a select group of nations working on hydrogen-fuel trains, a green alternative to diesel locomotives.

Hydrogen Train in India: A Leap Toward Greener Railways

The Hydrogen Train in India is part of Indian Railways’ broader goal to cut greenhouse gas emissions and integrate more renewable energy. By transitioning from diesel to hydrogen, the Railways aims to:

  • Reduce its carbon footprint
  • Lower dependence on imported fossil fuels
  • Promote clean and sustainable travel

According to railway officials, the project is now in its final commissioning stage, with advanced equipment testing underway before the train is deployed for commercial service.

Project Overview

Initiated by the Northern Railway zone in 2020-21, the hydrogen train project includes:

  1. Conversion of Diesel Cars – Two conventional 1600 HP diesel power cars are being converted to hydrogen fuel cell-powered traction systems.
  2. Hydrogen Storage & Fuelling Facility – Located at Jind, Haryana, with a capacity of 3,000 kg.

The total project cost is estimated at ₹136 crore, with the Research Design & Standards Organisation (RDSO) overseeing design validation and testing.

Planned Route & Operations

Once operational, the hydrogen-powered 10-coach diesel-electric multiple unit (DEMU) will:

  • Carry over 2,600 passengers
  • Operate between Jind and Sonepat, Haryana
  • Complete two round trips daily, covering 356 km

How Hydrogen Train Technology Works

Each power car will store 220 kg of hydrogen in high-pressure cylinders (350 bar). The hydrogen fuel cells generate electricity by combining hydrogen with oxygen, producing only water vapour as emissions.

Safety Measures in the Hydrogen Train in India

Given hydrogen’s flammable nature, Indian Railways has implemented:

  • Pressure relief valves
  • Leak detection systems
  • Flame sensors
  • Temperature monitoring
  • Advanced ventilation systems

Additionally, German safety auditor TÜV SÜD is conducting independent safety assessments.

Hydrogen Fuelling Station at Jind

The Jind facility will have:

  • 2,320 kg low-pressure hydrogen storage
  • 680 kg high-pressure hydrogen storage
  • Compliance with Petroleum Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO) standards
  • Dedicated power supply and firefighting infrastructure
