Why Is Mahavir Jayanti a Bank Holiday?

Mahavir Jayanti, also referred to as Mahavir Janma Kalyanak, is one of the most sacred festivals in Jainism. It commemorates the birth of Lord Mahavira, the 24th and final Tirthankara (spiritual teacher) of the Jain faith.

Historical texts suggest Mahavira was born in 599 BCE on the 13th day of Chaitra Shukla Paksha, which generally aligns with March or April in the Gregorian calendar. On this day, Jain devotees engage in rituals, prayers, processions, and acts of charity to honor Mahavira’s teachings of non-violence, truth, and renunciation.
