Operation Sindoor: India’s S-400 Sudarshan Chakra Neutralizes Pakistan’s Aerial Threats
As tensions between India and Pakistan escalated overnight on May 7–8, 2025, the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) elite S-400 Sudarshan Chakra air defence systems showcased their might by successfully intercepting multiple aerial threats launched from Pakistan. This marked a pivotal moment in India’s defence preparedness and reaffirmed its air superiority in the region.
S-400 Sudarshan Chakra: A Game-Changer in Air Defence
Dubbed “Sudarshan Chakra” by India, the Russian-origin S-400 Triumf system was inducted under a ₹35,000 crore deal signed in 2018. Capable of tracking and destroying aircraft, drones, and missiles from a distance of up to 400 kilometers, the system has redefined India’s strategic defence posture.
Each S-400 squadron comprises:
- Two batteries
- Six mobile launchers per battery
- Advanced multi-target radars
- Integrated command and control centers
Three out of the five contracted squadrons are fully operational, and the remaining two are expected by 2026.
Pakistan’s Air Offensive Foiled
Late Wednesday night, Pakistan attempted a coordinated drone and aircraft intrusion. The S-400 systems, placed on high alert, neutralized these threats before they could breach Indian airspace. Sources confirm that IAF’s interception success prevented a potentially devastating escalation.
In retaliation, India carried out precision strikes on Pakistani radar sites, including one in Lahore, using Harpy drones. This move followed Pakistan’s intensified shelling along the Line of Control (LoC), which tragically affected civilians in Srinagar, Jammu, Pathankot, Amritsar, Ludhiana, and Bhuj.
Why S-400 is India’s Aerial Shield
Former Vice Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Shirish Baban Deo (Retd), lauded the system’s layered missile defence and radar capability:
“The S-400 is perhaps the most potent air defence system globally. Its multiple missile types and advanced radar make it nearly impossible to jam.”
With up to 80% interception accuracy during trials and unmatched electronic warfare resistance, the system is a major deterrent. Its deployment has already caused Pakistan to reposition its F-16 fleet deeper inland to avoid surveillance and targeting.
Strategic Implications
The successful use of the S-400 Sudarshan Chakra not only disrupted Pakistan’s offensive but also showcased India’s swift retaliation capabilities. It sent a clear strategic signal to adversaries, emphasizing that India’s airspace is impenetrable and its response will be decisive.
